Our teaching philosophy
Most students who struggle are not lazy and are not incapable. They are missing something from earlier that nobody went back for, and the gap has been widening quietly ever since. Our first job is to find that gap. Our second is to close it without making the student feel foolish for having it.
We teach for understanding rather than recall. A memorised method survives until the question changes; an understood method survives the exam. That takes longer at the start and pays back for years.
Confidence
Students who believe they can do the subject will attempt the hard question. Confidence is built from genuine small successes, not encouragement alone.
Understanding
We check that a student can explain what they just did. If they cannot explain it, they have not learned it yet.
Consistent progress
Steady weekly progress beats intensive cramming. We track it lesson by lesson so it is visible rather than assumed.
Who runs MindSpring
Lee Wei Ming
Founder · Mechanical design engineer, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia
Lee Wei Ming is a mechanical design engineer and a graduate of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He works in the oil and gas industry, where mathematics and physics are not exam subjects but daily tools.
That is why he started MindSpring. The subjects students most often give up on are the ones that open the most doors later, and they are usually abandoned not because a student cannot do them, but because one gap went unaddressed and everything after it stopped making sense.
He sets the teaching standards at MindSpring, matches students to teachers himself, and would rather tell a parent honestly that something is not working than keep quiet about it.
Our mission
To give every student we teach a genuine understanding of their subjects, and the confidence that comes with it.
Honesty with parents
If a subject needs more hours, we say so. If it does not, we say that too.
Respect for the student
Nobody is made to feel stupid for not knowing something.
Preparation
Teachers come to lessons knowing what this student needs today.
Care with your family's information
We hold information about children. We treat it accordingly.
Student-centred teaching
Lessons are planned around what the student in front of us needs this week — not around a fixed script. That means starting each topic by checking what is already understood, teaching from that point, and adjusting the pace when the checking says to.
Talking to parents
Parents should not have to guess how tuition is going. Every lesson has a record of what was covered. Progress notes are written by the teacher and released to you through the parent portal. If something is not working, we would rather tell you early.
